Computer Literacy - or the mind for data processing with a computer :

If everyone understands all of the above, there happens a revolution.

Easy steps to build a hardware

  1. Case and Power Supply

When you choose a case, you don't want to buy one that comes with a power supply. Those power supplies are usually assembled in low cost and perhaps going to break in a year or so. Buy a blank case and a separate power supply. Here are the major form factors used in PC:

I recommend to use a power supply built with good electrolytic capacitors used inside that is made in Japan, e.g. Abee's Silentist S-xxxEA/EB/EC (not ED), Scythe's Gouriki 2, or Owltech's Seasonic series. Never choose cheap one like Zumax.

'Electrolytic capacitor' translates to '電解コンデンサ', and 'made in Japan' '日本製' written in Japanese, respectively.

  2. Video Card (Graphics Board)

There's been a war between ATI Radeon side and nVidia GeForce chips since we entered this world full of 3D graphics. ATI has been rumored to be focusing on impressive graphics quality, but lazy on supporting their device drivers for years. I'm not sure the merger with AMD has changed the situation a lot.

Vendor Stream Processors Bus WidthMemory Clock Max Operation Speed
    NVidia320u448bit2.xGHz 300-400 GFLOPS?
    AMD (ATI)800u256bit3.xGHz (GDDR5) 500 GFLOPS

If you go with nVidia, it is best to choose ELSA's boards or cards from mainboard vendors like Asus or Gigabyte.

  3. Display

    StandardResolution
    HVGA320x480
    WVGA800x480
    SVGA800x600
    XGA1024x768
    UXGA1600x1200
    WUXGA1920x1200
    QXGA2048x1536
    WQXGA2560x1600
  4. Operating System

Linux is one of the most affordable operating systems in the world. Nowadays it has plenty of good distributions even for beginners like these:

Among those luxury Linuxens, I believe Debian offers the best balance of usability and interoperability.

Linux Memory Management

> Ubuntu

現時点では, Debian はサーバとしてもクライアントとしても安定して使える ソリューションといえる.

Games are the important measure

You can't just believe what is said in the evaluation corner like in magazine 'Famicom-tsushin'.
